New cars are generally targeted by thieves, to be stolen to order.
The majority of new cars these days have keyless entry systems, which can cause problems due to car thieves being able to copy or ‘clone’ keys relatively easily and quickly.
Thieves can pick up the signal from a key fob from some distance away from the fob by using a laptop computer with relatively cheap software bought online.
The copying of a key fob can take from a few seconds to a few minutes, which then allows the thieves to steal a car quickly, especially when they don’t have to make a noice and force entry in to the vehicle by smashing a window.
The key fob signals can be picked up through walls, perhaps when standing outside your house or even when you visit a shop or cafe in a town centre. This often happens when your car is being targeted and has been followed by thieves.
When the signal has been detected and collected on the laptop, the thief can enter the car without the alarms being activated and use the car in exactly the same way as if they had the key.
Cars are usually stolen when the owner is unaware of the theft, perhaps at night.
The theft is therefore not known about for some time after the theft has taken place and so, although the tracking system will show where the car has been, the thieves take the car to an isolated site, find the tracking system using diagnostics equipment, remove it from the vehicle and drive the car on to either ship it abroad or strip it for parts.
The Ghost will not prevent a thief from copying or stealing your key but will prevent the thief from driving the vehicle away. If the thief does not know the pre-programmed, self-selected sequence of buttons on the dashboard, steering wheel and/or window adjusters they will not be able to drive the vehicle, even if they have the key or a copy of the key.
The only way the vehicle can be moved is by lifting it with a crane on to the back of a flat bed truck but, even then, it will not be able to be driven.
